Catherine West MP
Until recently Catherine was the Leader of Islington Council where she introduced the Living Wage for the lowest paid in the borough. Islington Council won the Employer of the Year 2014, awarded by the Living Wage Foundation for excellence in tackling low pay. Under Catherine's leadership, Islington Council was on track to have 2000 new affordable homes built by 2015, addressing head on the most difficult issue of lack of homes in the Capital. Following the Tory Lib Dem cuts to Educational Maintenance Allowance for the poorest families, Catherine, together with London Citizens, developed the student bursary scheme which provides a £300 bursary for all year 12 students, helping A level students in tough times to stay on in education.
Before running Islington Council, Catherine completed her Masters degree in Chinese Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and has worked in teaching, social work and publishing.
